New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 2024
The first New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival was in April 1970 when Mahalia Jackson sang along with the Eureka Brass Band, combining jazz and heritage. This event has held great cultural significance and popular appeal since its inception. In 1970, George Wein, a jazz impresario behind the Newport Jazz Festival, was hired to design and produce a unique festival for New Orleans. It was then that the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization to oversee the festival, was established. The first festival included Duke Ellington, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, Clifton Chenier, Fats Domino, The Meters, The Preservation Hall Band, Mardi Gras Indians, and more.
The festival was set to represent a new idea, which could only be held in New Orleans because of its rich musical heritage. The inaugural year saw 250 attendees, then expanded to two full weeks in the late 1970s. By the end of the 1990s, according to The New York Times, the festival had “become inseparable from the culture it presents.”
In 2024, the festival remains a staple for locals and an attraction for tourists. The 12 stages feature jazz, gospel, Cajun, zydeco, blues, R&B, rock, funk, African, Latin, Caribbean, folk, and much more. Keep reading to learn more about who you can expect to see at the 2024 festival!
